The Wal-Mart issue
On February 8, Wal-Mart announced that they will be leasing land from the
Peterkort family at the southwest corner of Cedar Hills Boulevard
and Barnes Road to build an approximately 160,000 sq. ft. store. (This came
one day after Beaverton officially took possession of the area after their
annexation.)
This has stirred a great deal of controversy in the area. An organization
called "Save Cedar Mill" has formed in opposition to the store
at this site. They have a website with informative links at savecedarmill.com
The Cedar Mill Business Association invited Wal-Mart and Save Cedar Mill
to come to our March meeting to let us learn more about the issue. Wal-Mart
declined to attend but did agree to answer questions submitted by our members.
These questions and answers are available here.
The Business Association decided at their March 15 meeting to poll the
entire membership as to whether we wish to support or oppose the
siting of the store in our community. It was decided by the membership
not to take a stand on the siting.
The City of
Beaverton has posted information about the issue on their website
here. Wal-Mart
has a page about the store, although they seem to think it's in Cedar
Hills.
